Most of us have had the experience of being in a “perfect moment.” You know what I mean, the feeling of the wind in your hair and the sand in your toes perhaps, or watching the kids play in the yard. Or maybe sitting down for a home-cooked meal with your love.
These experiences are often more novel than necessity. But we at Upward Spiral are here to remind you that not only are finding these moments a necessity to creating a fulfilled life, but there are ways you can increase your ability to take a sacred pause and remember what really matters.
Here is a few ways we recommend to find your zen within:
- Deep Breaths - Everyone knows the power of a few good deep breaths but how often to we all actually do them? Knowing and practicing are two different things. Even in the middle of writing this email, I took a moment to uncross my legs, sit up straight and “do nothing” for a few moments before returning back to writing. And you now what? Not only did I return to writing with a clearer head, I realized that the cup of coffee that I was thinking about making at the beginning of writing never got made and I didn’t care!
- Notice Your Attachments - OK, this one is a little harder. When we are upset, frustrated, or unhappy it is often because we have some particular attachment to a specific outcome. When the world doesn't meet our expectations, we can get up in arms forgetting that our lives are not the only ones being lived. When I show up on time for my dog’s vet appointment and I’m still waiting 30 minutes before anyone acknowledges me, I might get upset. This is because I have strict values when it comes to making sure my appointments start on time and that clients feel welcomed and at home. So my frustration comes from my attachments to starting on time and get in the way of me seeing the staff rushing behind the counter, woofing down their lunches, and working hard to stay on schedule.
- Listen to Your Emotions - Here’s the real secret: Emotions are our guides. They show us how we really feel and what we really need. The times that we want to listen to them the least are when we need them the most; these are sometimes referred to as the dark emotions. But they have huge lessons to teach us. Emotions that go unexpressed or acknowledged, take up room and energy within us. They start to color our experience. (“I knew they wouldn’t respect my time here, just like everywhere else.” “I can’t enjoy the beach unless I have the perfect body”) Next time you are having an emotional moment, take the sacred pause and listen to what is underneath it. Know that your unfolding into a better you starts right here.
One great tool that we’ve used here for releasing the charge of unhealthy emotions in a way that is gentle and effective is Heart Forgiveness. Heart Forgiveness is a wonderful way to let go of anger and resentment without taking about it! You learn to use energy measuring to zone into your attachments, and then release them with soothing visualizations. The class includes lecture, demonstration, and exercises to help facilitate this process.
Heart Forgiveness is available as an individual series ($340) or as a group ($240). Groups are kept small and our last group of the year starts Oct 20th.
