This month we are featuring Bergamot, a deliciously bright scent that is perfect for the summer time. Please note that many Bergamot oils contain phototoxic components which means if it is used on the skin, sun exposure (or UV tanning beds) should be avoided for up to 24 hours. The Bergamot we stock on the store has had the phototoxic components removed and is safe for skin use.
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
Bergamot is like the friend who will, unasked, come over when you are feeling down. Whether what you need is someone to call up all your friends to take you to the beach or instead to nest up on the couch with an unlimited supply of snacks, Bergamot reminds us of the value of both the inner and outer world when it comes to lifting us from darker emotions like depression and anxiety. It does this by lighting a path so we can see the next steps we need to take in our healing.
The scent of Bergamot is bright and sunny, though it is one of the softer citruses. Its sharp sweetness hints at the balancing quality of this oil on the mind and emotions. Bergamot was one of the first oils to be studied for it's effect on the nervous system, particularly with treating anxiety. For the body, Bergamot is a great choice for skin care and respiratory conditions.
When we are sad, depressed, anxious or uncomfortable, we have the opportunity to turn inward and ask what is it that needs healing and what steps do we need to take to get there. Bergamot can help us to take a step back, see everything in greater light, and recognize what is out of balance.
Consider the concept of balance in your life currently. Do you feel more drawn inward or outward? Are those activities serving you? What can bring you more in balance?
