We’re lucky here in Florida. We don’t have to shovel snow out of our driveways or scrape ice off of our windshields in winter. But that doesn’t mean we don’t feel it when the temperature drops. In the colder months, it can be hard to get going in the morning, and it can be especially difficult when we’re experiencing pain.
In each of our bodies, connective tissue surrounds every muscle fiber and every muscle as a whole. This connective tissue is called fascia, and it is directly affected by the cold. Fascia prefers to be warm and loose, moving freely. In colder temperatures, it’s less happy as it becomes more rigid. This can limit our range of motion and cause us to experience more pain.
So, what can you do about it? There are so many ways to treat your body with heat this winter. Some of our favorite remedies at Upward Spiral are:
Hot Epsom Salt Baths
Epsom salts help our bodies by providing muscles with magnesium, helping them relax. Together with hot water, our muscles are nourished and our fascia is loosened up and happy. There’s no better ending to the day than a hot epsom salt bath with some Lavender essential oil in the air.
Mother Earth Pillows or Heating Pads
If you’re feeling pain in your low back, neck, or ankles, try putting a Mother Earth Pillow or heating pad on the area. The heat will warm up the fascia, helping relieve pain. They’re also just very comforting when you’re feeling cold.
