This part of December marks the approach of a return of light to our days. It is a wonderful time to contemplate how we can find the light within dark places.
Most of us don't want to give our darkness the time of day. Some call this our shadow self, that part of us that we may not want others to know about. It is where our sadness, grief, guilt, greed, anger, and selfishness all intermingle. But it is also the site for some of our deepest healing.
One thing we've learned is that embracing the pain of our lives, truly holding it and getting to know it, is the first step to being able to let it go. Though we want to only embrace the fun, joyous, and pleasurable aspects of life, there is great value in finding the time to descend into our depths of darkness.
Each year, the earth goes through its own time of increasing darkness. The days get shorter and the nights longer. But by early next week the light will be returning.
This weekend, spend a few moments contemplating how your pain has served you this year. Perhaps it brought new awareness to your body or emotions. Maybe it influenced you to take new steps in your life that you wouldn't have otherwise. There is usually some hidden wisdom even within life's most traumatic experiences.
Upward Spiral aims to hold a torch for others in these dark places and affirm that the light will return. Let us know how we can help you increase the light in your lives.
